The raw materials for a large petrochemical industry situated to the east of Edmonton are provided by oil refineries within Edmonton.
The Athabasca oil sands have an estimated 1.6 trillion barrels or 254km3 of unconventional oil reserves, which is roughly the amount of all conventional oil reserves that could be found within the rest of the globe. There are new extraction methods being developed within the province of Alberta like the method of steam assisted gravity drainage. This development has made synthetic crude oil and bitumen able to be produced at prices similar to those of conventional crude.
